REDEFINING THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS:  A PERIOD OF REFLECTION AND GROWTH

As spring arrives, many high school juniors are starting to think about college applications.  The next six to eight months can be a time of excitement and anticipation for some, while others might grapple with feelings of anxiety and uncertainty about the road ahead.

The transition from high school to college marks a significant milestone in one’s life journey, an experience that transcends mere academic progression. It is a pivotal moment that warrants reflection and celebration, for it symbolizes the culmination of years of growth and the beginning of a new chapter filled with possibilities.

Far beyond a mere transactional shift, the progression to college represents a personal and academic transition. It is a time when students are encouraged to pause and reflect on past experiences that have shaped who they are.  There are few times in life when we are asked to stop and carefully produce a shared document that includes personal background and accomplishments, values, experiences that have shaped us, and an audit of our character and how those elements can add to a future community.

This transition period is also exciting because it is not just a time to reflect on the past but simultaneously a time to look into the future. It is not merely about crossing a threshold into higher education but about embracing the opportunities for self-discovery and exploration that lie ahead. It is about recognizing the transformative power of education and the potential to shape one’s future trajectory.

Will there still be many transactional tasks to complete, stress related to those tasks, and possible disappointment involved?  Yes.  Those realities can not be and should not be ignored, but they also generate personal growth.

Ultimately, the transition from high school to college is a journey to be embraced and celebrated—a journey that holds the promise of new experiences, friendships, and discoveries. By reflecting on past accomplishments and embracing the excitement of the journey ahead, students can lay the foundation for a fulfilling and rewarding college experience, one that will shape their lives for years to come.
